The Best Products and Tools for Cleaning Your Pram

The Best Products and Tools for Cleaning Your Pram

One of the most common questions parents ask is simply: what should I actually use to clean my pram? The answer depends on what you're cleaning and how dirty it is. Here's a comprehensive guide to the products and tools that work best.

    Water: Your Most Important Tool

It sounds obvious, but water is the foundation of almost every pram cleaning task. Cold or lukewarm water is best for rinsing fabrics and delicate materials. Warm water with a little soap is ideal for frames, wheels, and hard surfaces.

Avoid using hot water on fabrics, as it can cause colours to run and certain materials to shrink.

    Mild Detergent and Baby-Safe Soap

A gentle, fragrance-free detergent is your go-to for most cleaning jobs. Baby-safe washing liquid is ideal — it's designed to be kind to sensitive skin, which means it's also kind to pram fabrics. Avoid biological detergents, as the enzymes can be harsh on some materials.

    White Vinegar

White vinegar is a natural powerhouse. Diluted with equal parts water, it makes an excellent all-purpose cleaner for frames, wheels, and hard surfaces. It's also effective at killing mould spores and neutralising odours. The vinegar smell disappears as it dries.

    Baking Soda

Baking soda is brilliant for tackling odours. Sprinkle it generously on fabric surfaces, leave for 15-20 minutes, then vacuum off. It absorbs musty smells, food odours, and general staleness. Mixed into a paste with a little water, it also works as a gentle stain remover.

    Microfibre Cloths

Microfibre cloths are essential. They pick up dirt and bacteria far more effectively than ordinary cloths, and they're gentle enough for every surface on your pram. Keep a few dedicated to pram cleaning so you're not cross-contaminating with kitchen or bathroom dirt.

    Soft Brushes and Toothbrushes

A soft-bristled brush is perfect for scrubbing fabric seats and removing ground-in dirt. An old toothbrush is invaluable for getting into tight spaces — harness slots, folding joints, and wheel mechanisms.

    Vacuum Cleaner

A vacuum with a nozzle attachment makes quick work of crumbs, sand, and dust trapped in seat creases and the storage basket. Use it before any wet cleaning to avoid turning dry dirt into muddy paste.

    Specialist Products

For specific challenges, there are some specialist products worth having: - Fabric stain remover for stubborn marks - Chrome or metal polish for frame touch-ups - Silicone lubricant for wheels and joints - Fabric protector spray for post-clean protection - Anti-bacterial spray for a final sanitising pass

    What to Avoid

Stay away from bleach (unless heavily diluted for mould treatment), abrasive scouring pads, pressure washers, and any product containing solvents. These can damage fabrics, strip coatings from frames, and degrade plastic components.
