How to Clean a Pram Frame: A Detailed Guide

The frame is the structural foundation of your pram, and keeping it clean does more than improve appearances — it helps maintain the folding mechanism, keeps wheels running smoothly, and prevents corrosion over time.
Why Frame Cleaning Matters
Dirt, grit, and moisture that accumulate on the frame can work their way into joints and moving parts, causing stiffness, squeaking, and eventually damage. Salt from winter roads is particularly corrosive. Regular cleaning extends the lifespan of your pram significantly.
Remove Everything First
Before cleaning the frame, strip off all fabrics, the seat unit, canopy, and basket. Remove the wheels too if possible. This gives you full access to every part of the structure, including those hidden joints and hinges where grime loves to accumulate.
Cleaning Different Frame Materials
Aluminium Frames Most modern prams use lightweight aluminium. Wipe down with warm soapy water using a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads, which can scratch the surface. Dry thoroughly to prevent water marks.
Chrome and Polished Metal Chrome needs gentler handling. Use a dedicated chrome cleaner or a mixture of warm water and a small amount of white vinegar. Buff with a soft, dry cloth to restore the shine. Avoid anything acidic sitting on chrome for too long.
Plastic-Coated Frames Some budget and lightweight prams have plastic-coated frames. These are the easiest to clean — a simple wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent will do the job.
Don't Skip the Joints and Hinges
Use a soft toothbrush dipped in soapy water to work into the folding joints, hinge points, and brake mechanisms. These areas trap sand, crumbs, and moisture, and if left uncleaned, the folding mechanism can become stiff or even seize.
Lubricate Moving Parts
Once clean and dry, apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to all moving joints, wheel axles, and the folding mechanism. This keeps everything operating smoothly and helps protect against future corrosion. Avoid WD-40 on plastic parts as it can cause degradation over time.
Finishing Touches
Give the whole frame a final wipe with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. If your frame has any scratches, a touch-up pen in the matching colour (often available from the manufacturer) can help keep things looking sharp.
